The Marshmallow Challenge

ELEMENT

The Marshmallow Challenge

Further Reading 1 The Marshmallow Challenge
1 Have you ever heard about the marshmallow challenge? It is a quite simple but
interesting game. A team of three to five people tries to build a free-standing
spaghetti tower. They must put a marshmallow on top. Eighteen minutes are
given to make the tower. This challenge is popular and has been done in many
schools, colleges, companies, and even kindergartens!

2 For the marshmallow challenge, all you need is 20 pieces of spaghetti, one yard
of tape, one yard of string, and a marshmallow. You can use all or just part of the
things you are given, and it is possible to break the spaghetti and cut the tape and
string to make the structure. However, you cannot cut or eat part of the
marshmallow!

3 This is the procedure of this activity. First, make groups of three to five people.
Second, each team gets all of the materials. Third, the following information is
given to all members:
Please make a free-standing structure with the materials given. You should
put the marshmallow on top of the structure. The structure must stand by
itself. You have 18 minutes to make it. When the time is up, the height of the
structure is measured. The team which makes the tallest structure wins!

4 Many people and groups have tried the marshmallow challenge, and there have
been some interesting results. For example, groups of business students, CEOs,
engineers and architects, kindergarten students, and lawyers tried this challenge.
Can you guess which team performed best, and which team worst? The business
students performed the worst, and, to our surprise, the kindergarten students did
better than most of the adults. As expected, the team of engineers and architects
made the tallest tower.

5 Why did the business students perform even worse than the kindergarten
students? That is because they tried to find a single right answer. They made a
plan, built their structure, and finally put a marshmallow on top. It seemed like a
good process, but when they found their tower could not hold the marshmallow, they
had no time to change the structure.
6 On the other hand, the kindergarten students started to make a small structure
with a marshmallow. Then, they added more spaghetti to make the structure taller.
Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t. By trial and error, the kindergarten
team successfully made a taller structure than most of the other groups.

7 There was another interesting result. The CEO team performed worse than the
kindergarten students. When an executive administrator joined them, however,
their performance got much better. Why did that happen? The administrator
helped facilitate the process of the marshmallow challenge. He checked how they
were creating the structure, managed the time, and improved communication. As a
result, he improved the team’s performance, and their performance was second,
after that of the engineers and architects.

8 What can we learn from this challenge, in addition to trial and error and the
importance of a facilitator? First, as the best team showed, more knowledge and
experience help achieve the goal. Second, there is more than one right answer.
Third, it teaches us about our misconceptions. For example, we think a
marshmallow is light and soft, but in this challenge, it can be heavy enough to
destroy the structure. We have to find our misconceptions when we work together
for a goal.
9 Why is this challenge so popular? Through this challenge, everyone can learn
the important elements of working as a team in school and in society. In many
schools, the marshmallow challenge is done as an activity on the first day of class
because this activity is good for learning lessons about how to work together toward
a shared goal and for building team spirit. Above all, it is fun and enjoyable. Why
don’t you try the marshmallow challenge?
