１ A cat wearing a scarf sits in the middle of a crowd. The name of the cat is Bob.
He has a beautiful smile on his face.
２ Next to him, his owner James Bowen stands with his guitar. He is playing
songs. Every now and then, he stops playing and bends down to Bob. “Come on,
Bob, high-five!” he says.
３ Bob moves his whiskers, raises a paw, and touches James’s hand. The crowd
says, “How cute!” A smart-looking lady takes out a £20 bill and puts it in the cap at
Bob’s feet.

４ Bob always sits calmly in Central London. He doesn’t get surprised at passing
cars or loud noises around him. Bob is no ordinary cat. Bob and James have been
best friends and have helped each other for a long time.
５ It all began in 2007 on a Thursday evening in March. James says, “He was
hiding in my building. He was attacked by another cat or something and had a
great big wound on his side, the poor thing.”

６ At first, James didn’t want to take in the poor cat. Taking care of himself was
hard enough. He was a failed musician and recovering drug addict. He was living
hand-to-mouth.
７ When he was just three, his parents separated and he moved to Australia with
his mother. James and his mother moved often, and James had to change schools
many times. He was bullied a lot, too. He said, “I thought no one understood me.”
８ When he was 18, he moved back to London, with dreams of becoming a rock star.
However, he didn’t do well and started living on the street and using drugs.

９ When James met Bob, he was still trying to recover from his addiction. After
failing to find the cat’s owner, James kept him until Bob was well enough. “I didn’t
plan to keep him forever. I thought he was a street cat,” said James. “So after
three weeks, I tried to set him free.”
10 Bob, however, had other ideas. James recalls: “I’d take him outside, but he just
wouldn’t run off. I would leave for the day and he’d follow me. One day, he
followed me all the way on to the Number 73 bus. He climbed on right after me!”
Soon James began performing with him. “I got him a lead, but he likes to climb up
on my shoulders. He just picked it up naturally. He’s a very smart cat.”

11 The two make quite a sight. James is six feet three inches and walks down the
road with his cat on his shoulder. While James sings, Bob sits on a blanket.
People are drawn to Bob, so they stop and listen to James. James takes home
almost three times as much money as he took home before Bob came along. James
is not invisible anymore.
12 Bob was becoming more and more popular because fans took videos and put them
on the Internet.

13 Even so, when Mary Pachnos, a literary agent, came to James, he was surprised.
“She said she had seen us on the street for weeks, and she wanted to know if I
was interested in telling my story. Soon, publishers were also interested and six
months later we had a book. It came out on my birthday. The best present of my
life!”
14 The first edition spent six months on the top-ten bestseller lists. It was also
translated into different languages and sold in many countries.

15 Bob changed James’s life. James said, “I believe it came down to this little man.
He came and asked me for help, and he needed me more than I needed to hurt my
own body. He is what I wake up for every day now. He’s given me the right
direction to live my life. I owe everything to him. For the first time, I felt like I
had a family. He gave me the determination to make my life and his life better.”
Bob has guided James towards wanting to live a better life by giving him love and
support. With Bob and the help of people, James took control of his life.

16 James hopes to buy his own home and to work for charities in the future. He
wants to help the charities because they used to help him.
17 “The wonderful thing about all this is I have a purpose now. I can help with
Blue Cross and with programs that help people with drug problems and people who
live on the street. I have been able to do all this just by saving one cat. It’s
amazing to be able to give back.”
