Do you remember the story about Emma and her boyfriend, Todd? In it, it was Emma’s
birthday. She had gone to a department store to exchange a gift. There, by mistake, she
was accused of stealing. At that time, she thought Todd was out shopping somewhere for
her birthday present. She was angry. She thought that he had forgotten about her birthday
until that very day. Also, she later came home with a stranger’s cell phone.
Actually, Todd hadn’t been shopping for a present. He had, in fact, just been killing time.
He hadn’t really needed to look for a gift for Emma. He had already bought one the week
before. He hadn’t wanted her to know that, though. In particular, he hadn’t wanted her to
know that he had been thinking about her birthday for a long time. Todd hadn’t wanted
Emma to feel too confident about his feelings.
Now let’s find out what else happened on that day.

君はエマと彼女のボーイフレンド，トッドの話を覚えていますか？お話の中では
エマの誕生日でした。エマはプレゼントを交換するためにデパートに行っていました。
そこで彼女は，誤って，盗みを働いたと訴えられたのです。当時，エマは，トッドが
自分の誕生日のプレゼントを買いに外出していると思っていました。エマは怒ってい
ました。まさにその日までトッドは自分の誕生日を忘れていたのだと思っていたので
す。さらに，知らない人の携帯電話を持って帰宅してしまいました。
実を言うと，トッドはプレゼントを買いに行ってはいませんでした。彼は，実は，
ただ時間をつぶしていただけでした。彼はエマへのプレゼントを探す必要はありませ
んでした。一週間前にすでに買っていたのです。しかし，そのことをエマに知られた
くなかったのです。特に，長い間，彼女の誕生日について考えていたことを知られた

When Emma was being accused of stealing, Todd was in a nearby convenience store. He
was going to buy something to drink. Also, he thought he might buy a magazine. It would
be something to read while he was waiting for Emma to finish at the department store. As
he was walking around the store, he noticed that a woman was watching him closely. She
seemed to be the store manager. “She probably thinks I’m going to try to steal something,”
he thought. He imagined that a lot of things probably got stolen from that store. Maybe
many of them were stolen by high school kids like himself. Still, he was not happy to be
looked at in that way.
“Can’t she see that I’m not the type of guy that steals?” he thought. “Store managers
should be able to tell the difference between people who steal and people who don’t.”

エマが盗みを働いたとして訴えられているとき，トッドは近くのコンビニエンスス
トアにいました。何か飲み物を買おうとしていました。また，雑誌を買おうかと思っ
ていました。エマがデパートで買い物を済ませるのを待っている間の読み物になるだ
ろうと思ったのです。トッドが店の中をぶらぶらしていると，一人の女性が自分のほ
うをじっと見つめているのに気が付きました。その女性はお店の経営者のようでした。
「彼女は多分，私が何かを盗もうとしている，と考えているな」とトッドは思いまし
た。彼は，お店では多分たくさんのものが盗まれているのだと想像しました。多分そ
のうちの多くがトッドのような高校生によって盗まれたのでしょう。それでも，そん
なふうに見られるのは気分がいいものではありませんでした。
「私が盗みをするようなタイプではないということが彼女にはわからないのかな」
と彼は思いました。「お店の経営者なら盗みをする人としない人を区別することができ
なければならないのに」

Todd decided to buy a magazine (Body Building World) and a drink (apple juice). He saw
that the manager was still watching him. He guessed what she must be imagining. She was
probably thinking that he was going to run out of the store without paying for anything.
“Maybe she’s just new at her job,” Todd thought. When he got in line to pay, he looked
at the person in front of him. It was a young man. Todd looked him over carefully. He
seemed to be about 19 or 20 years old.
“Now, here is the type of guy that steals,” Todd said to himself. “She should have been
watching him, not me.”
Finally, it was the young man’s turn to pay. He put down a magazine (also Body Building
World) in front of the manager at the cash register. 10
“That will be $4.57, please, with tax,” she said.
Instead of paying, though, the young man took a small gun out of his pocket. He pointed
it at the manager. “Give me all your money right now, or I’ll shoot you between the eyes,
lady!” he said. “Give me everything!”

トッドは，雑誌（ボディービルの世界）と飲み物（アップルジュース）を買うこと
に決めました。彼はそれでもまだ店長が自分のことを見ているのがわかりました。彼
は彼女が考えているに違いないことを推測しました。彼女はおそらく，彼がお金を支
払わずにお店から逃げ出すのではないかと思っていたのでしょう。
「彼女は新米の店長なんだろう」とトッドは思いました。彼は支払いの列に並ぶと，
前に並んでいる人に目をやりました。若い男でした。トッドはその男を注意深く観察

銃を店長に向けて言いました。「今すぐ有り金を全部よこせ。でなければ，あんたの眉
間を撃つ」と男は言いました。「全部よこせ」

The store suddenly became very quiet. Todd’s legs began to shake. He didn’t
know what to do.
“Hurry!” the young man shouted. “I want all your money now!”
The manager took out all the money that she had and put it into a bag.
“And give me a bottle of brandy! I want some brandy, too!” he said. He pointed
the gun at the shelf just behind the manager, where the brandy was kept.
But before the manager could move, Todd said, “You’re too young to have brandy.”
Todd’s legs were still shaking, but he looked straight at the back of the man’s head
as he said it.
The man turned and pointed the gun at Todd.
“What!?! What did you just say?”
“I said ‘You’re too young to have brandy,’” Todd replied. “You have to be 21 to get
brandy in this state. I know― I’ve tried. And you look younger than 21.”
“Can’t you see this gun, kid?” the man said. “Do you want to get shot, too? Just
keep quiet.”
“The boy’s right,” the manager said to the young man. “I can’t give you any
brandy unless you’re 21 or older. And you look younger than that.”
Todd smiled and wondered what would happen next.

店内は急に静まり返りました。トッドは両足が震え始めました。何をしていいかわ
かりませんでした。「早くしろ」と男は叫びました。「すぐに有り金全部頂く」
店長はありったけのお金を取り出すと袋に入れました。
「ブランデーも一瓶くれ。ブランデーも少しばかり欲しいんだ」と彼は言いました。
彼は，店長のちょうど後ろにある棚を銃で指しました。そこにはブランデーが置いて
ありました。
しかし，店長が動く前に，トッドがこう言ったのです。「君はブランデーを飲むに
は若すぎるね」。トッドの足はまだ震えていましたが，そう言いながら，男の頭の後ろ
を真っすぐ見つめました。
その男は振り向いてトッドに銃を向けました。
「何だと。今何て言った」
「君はブランデーを飲むには若すぎる，と言ったんだ」とトッドは答えました。「こ
の州ではブランデーを買うには 21 歳になっていなくちゃいけない。僕も経験がある。
君は 21 歳より若く見える」
「この銃が見えないのか」と男は言いました。「お前も撃たれたいのか。黙ってい
ろ」
「その少年の言うとおりだわ」と店長はその若い男に言いました。「21 歳以上でな
ければブランデーは渡せません。あなたはそれより若そうだわ」
トッドはニコッと笑って，次に何が起こるのかなと思いました。

Todd’s Saturday 2
At the end of the first part of this story, a young man was trying to rob a convenience
store. He had a gun, and it looked like he would get all the store’s money. But then he told
the manager to give him some brandy, too. That was when Todd said to him, “You’re too
young to have brandy.” This created a new problem. The store manager told the man that
she herself agreed with Todd. “I can’t give you any brandy unless you’re 21 or older,” she
said. “And you look younger than that.”
What happened next was this: the young man with the gun got even angrier. “What are
you talking about?” he said. “I’ve got a gun and I’m taking your money. And I want a bottle
of brandy, too. Give it to me!”
“I’m sorry. I can’t do that. You can take the money, but I can’t give you any brandy. It’s
against the law . . . unless you are 21 or older. I might get into trouble. I might lose my job.
I might even get arrested if I gave you any alcohol.”
“I’m 22!” the man shouted.
For some reason, when Todd heard this, his legs stopped shaking. The situation had
begun to seem more humorous than actually dangerous.

このお話の前半部分の最後で，若い男がコンビニエンスストアで強盗をしようとし
ていました。銃を持ち，お店のお金を全部手に入れようとしているように見えました。
ところが，彼は店長にブランデーも少々欲しいと言ったのです。トッドが彼に「君は
ブランデーを飲むには若すぎるだろう」と言ったのはそのときでした。この発言が新
たな問題を生みました。店長が，自分はトッドに賛成だと言ったのです。「21 歳以上
でなければ，ブランデーを渡すわけにはいかないのよ」と彼女は言いました。「君はそ
れよりも若く見えるわ」
次に起こったことはこうでした。銃を持った若者はさらに怒りました。「お前たち
は何を言っているんだ」と言いました。「俺は銃を持っていて，ここにある金をもらっ
ていく。ブランデーもだ。よこせ」「残念だけどそれはできないわ。お金は持っていっ
てもいいけど，ブランデーはあげられないわ。法に触れることになるの。君が 21 歳
以上でなければね。私が困った立場になるかもしれない。失職するかもしれない。君
にお酒をあげれば逮捕されるかもしれないのよ」。
「俺は 22 歳だ」と男は叫びました。
どういうわけか，トッドはこれを聞くと，両足の震えが収まりました。事態は実際
に危険な状況というよりは，より滑稽なものに思われ始めました。

“Ha-ha!” Todd laughed. “You don’t look 22 at all. Can you prove it?”
“What!?!” the man said. “What do you mean ‘prove it’? What are you talking about?”
“Can’t you see that people are tired of standing in this line?” Todd said. “Everyone just
wants you to take the money and leave. We’re all busy people here, you know. If you really
want that brandy, you’ll have to show that you’re actually old enough to be given it. Don’t
you have a driver’s license or something to show the manager?”
“Of course, I do. Here, look at this.”
The man took his driver’s license out of his wallet and showed it to Todd. Then he
showed it to the manager. She studied the license carefully and said, “Well! You really are
22! I’m so sorry― my mistake.”
“Oops!” Todd said. “My mistake, too. I’m sorry. Please accept my apologies.”
“That’s okay,” the young man said, smiling. “Don’t worry about it. I guess I do look a
little young for my age.” Then he asked the manager, “Well, can I have the money and
brandy now?” He was still pointing his gun at her, but he looked quite pleased with
himself.

「あはは」とトッドは笑いました。「君は 22 歳にはまったく見えないよ。22 歳であ
ることを証明できるかい」
「何だと！」と男は言いました。「証明するって，どういうことなんだ。何を言っ
てるんだ」
「人が並んで待つことに飽き飽きしているのがわからないのかい」とトッドが言い
ました。「みんな，君にお金を持ってここから立ち去ってほしいだけなんだ。僕たちは
みんな忙しいんだよ。な。もし本当にそのブランデーが欲しければ，実際にブランデ
ーをもらってもいい年齢であることを証明しないとね。店長に示せるような運転免許
証とか何か持っていないの」
「もちろん，持っているさ。これを見てみな」
男は財布から運転免許証を取り出してトッドに見せました。それから店長に見せま
した。店長は免許証をじっくりと見て「いやー！君は確かに 22 歳だわ。ごめんな
さい。私の間違いよ」と言いました。
「あれっ！」とトッドは言いました。「僕も間違えた。ごめんなさい。申し訳あり
ません」
「別にいいよ」若い男はニコニコしながら言いました。「気にするなよ。どうやら
俺は年の割には，若く見られるようだ」それから，彼は店長に向かって言いました。
「じゃあ，お金とブランデーをもらえるね」と。男はまだ彼女に銃を向けてはいまし
たが，極めて得意げな様子でした。

“Sure,” the manager said. “Sorry to have kept you waiting.” She put a bottle of brandy
into the bag with the money and handed it to him. The young man took the bag and hurried
out of the store. The manager immediately took a cell phone out her pocket and called the
police. “Hello,” she said into the phone, “this is Jennifer Rawls, the manager of the Kwik
& E-Z Mart on 4th Avenue. I want to report a robbery that has just occurred. The robber
just escaped on foot, heading east. His name is Rex Miller, and he lives at 451 Pine Street.
And he’s 22 years old!”
The manager then looked at Todd and said, “Thanks! But I never thought he’d be so
stupid as to show me his actual driver’s license.”
“I guess a lot of criminals are fairly stupid,” Todd replied. “Otherwise, they wouldn’t try
doing such stupid things. In any case, you’ll probably get most of your money back.
There’s a good chance that the police will catch him before he has time to spend much of it.
He might manage to drink some of the brandy, though. I think you might as well forget
about getting back a full bottle.”
After that, Todd left the store with his Body Building World and apple juice― without
paying for them. The manager had said that today he could have them for free.
Now it was almost time for him to go back to the department store to look for Emma.

「いいわよ」と店長は言いました。「待たせてごめんなさい」彼女は一本のブラン
デーをお金と一緒に袋に入れてその男に手渡しました。その若い男は袋を手にとって
店を急いで出て行きました。店長は急いでポケットから携帯電話を取り出して警察に
電話をかけました。「もしもし，4 番街にありますクイックアンドイージーマートの
店長をしておりますジェニファー・ロールズと申しますが，たった今発生した強盗事
件について連絡したいんです。強盗はたった今徒歩で東の方向に向かって逃げて行き
ました。強盗の名前はレックス・ミラーと言って 451 パイン通りに住んでいます。年
は 22 歳です」と電話をしました。
店長は，それからトッドを見て言いました。「ありがとうね。でも，彼が本物の自
動車運転免許証を見せるほど愚かだとは思わなかったわ」
「僕は犯罪者の多くがかなり愚かだと思いますよ」とトッドは答えました。「でな
ければ，こんな愚かなことはしませんよ。いずれにしても，お金の大半は戻ってくる
でしょう。強盗がお金の多くを使わないうちに，警察が彼を捕まえる可能性はかなり
ありますよ。ブランデーは少々飲まれてしまうかもしれませんがね。ブランデーがま
るまる一本戻ってくることについては考えないほうがいいと思いますよ」
その後で，トッドは，『ボディービルの世界』とアップルジュースを持って店を出
ました。支払いをせずに。店長は，今日は無料でいい，と言ったのです。
ようやくトッドがエマを探しにデパートへ戻る時間になりました。

Later that day, Todd and Emma got together again at her house. First, they
watched a DVD. It was a movie called Emma and based on a famous novel. It was
also very romantic. Then they called a local restaurant to have some pizza
delivered.
“Would you like something to drink while we’re waiting?” Emma asked.
“I’d like a glass of brandy, please,” Todd answered.
“What!?!” Emma cried out.
“I’m just joking,” Todd said. “I still haven’t told you what happened to me today,
but I will. Also, I have a little present for you.”
“You mean that you finally found something this afternoon?” Emma asked. “Well,
if it’s nice, I guess I’ll forgive you. But first let’s try to decide what to do with this
extra cell phone.”

その日遅くにトッドとエマは，再び一緒にエマの家に集まりました。最初に DVD
を観ました。『エマ』というタイトルの映画で，有名な小説をもとにしていました。ま
た大変ロマンチックな映画でした。それから，地元のレストランにピザを宅配してく
れるように電話しました。
「待っている間に何か飲まない」とエマは尋ねました。
「ブランデーを一杯いただきたいな」とトッドは答えました。
「何ですって！」とエマは大きな声を出しました。
「冗談さ」とトッドは言いました。「今日，僕に起こったことを君にまだ話してな
かったね。でも話してあげるから。それに，君へのちょっとしたプレゼントもあるか
ら」
「それってようやく今日の午後になって何かプレゼントを見つけたってこと？」と
エマは尋ねました。「まあ，素敵なものなら許してあげるわ。でも先にこの余分な携帯
電話をどうしたらいいか決めましょう」と。
