More Than Just Shelters

Part 1
Due to natural disasters, such as floods, typhoons, and earthquakes, many people around the
world have lost their homes and live in miserable conditions. Today, let’s learn about a
Japanese man who tackles this problem by providing emergency shelters for people in need.
1 / According to some statistics, in 2014 alone, more than million people in the world were
living in emergency shelters because of natural disasters. Unfortunately, their living
conditions were often terrible. Some people were freezing, and others were suffering from
quickly spreading infectious diseases. Also, it was almost impossible for them to have
privacy.

2 / It is very difficult to improve such conditions, but many people are working hard to
solve the problems. Shigeru Ban, a Japanese architect, is one of them. He has been
building temporary houses for people in need since 1995, while also designing fabulous
buildings for companies and museums. Ban has become a world-famous architect, because
his work for victims impressed many people.

3 / Another thing that has made him famous is the material he uses. Surprisingly, he
mainly uses cardboard-paper tubes. They are lightweight, making it possible to build
houses quickly. And they are made of paper, so you can get a lot of them at a reasonable
price. Additionally, they are eco-friendly. Being easily recycled, they are less likely to affect
the environment. Water- and fire-proofed tubes are strong enough to be used for
construction material. Using those tubes, Ban has been building paper houses for people
who need shelter.

Part 2
4 / You might wonder what’s behind his activities. He thinks too many architects are just
interested in houses or buildings for rich people. Those architects, he believes, ignore
people who badly need simple shelter. “How could architects be more helpful to such
people? What should I do as an architect?” When young, Ban asked these questions to
himself, but he didn’t get the answers until 1995.

5 / In January of 1995, the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake hit Kobe City. Many houses
and other buildings were burned and destroyed. Ten days later, Ban visited Kobe’s Nagata
Ward. He had heard about how Vietnamese residents in Kobe were still living in cheap
tents in a park. They couldn’t move to emergency houses provided by the government
because the shelters were so far away from their workplaces. Ban and volunteers worked
together to build paper shelters for them. They also built a “Paper Church” for the
community’s people. It was to be just a temporary building, but people really loved it, and
the church eventually became the symbol of their community. These activities had a big
impact on Ban’s life and helped him realize what he should do in the future.

Part 3
6 / After his work in Kobe, Ban started providing his paper shelters in other countries,
such as Turkey, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines, each time after a big earthquake. With
paper-tube shelters, many victims were able to avoid living in terrible conditions.

7 / In 2008, a big earthquake hit Chengdu City, China, and many school buildings were
destroyed. Learning that, Ban soon flew to China and started building classrooms for an
elementary school. When he had accomplished his work, children were really pleased
because they would be able to study again.

8 / In 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake hit the Tohoku region. Many victims were
housed in gyms in their own communities or in nearby areas. The gyms were very
crowded, and there was no privacy. These conditions created a lot of stress. To secure
people’s privacy, Ban persuaded local governments to set up paper partitions in the gyms.
These partitions worked very well and were quite helpful in relieving people’s stress.

9 / In 2014, Ban received the Pritzker Prize, one of the highest prizes for architects. He
was awarded it for his excellent designs and humanitarian activities. Many people think he
provides more than just shelters. What he really gives people is lives with dignity.

Part 4
10/ Today, Ban is thinking about a new project. His plan is to produce a large number of
low-cost houses in developing countries. The houses would be provided for low-income
people there. But if a big disaster were to happen in a country, houses made in factories
would be exported to the country. Ban believes his project will be helpful for many more
victims of disasters.

11 / Here is Ban’s message for young people. “Today Japanese people have many more
chances to work with foreign people than before. Learning foreign languages is very
important, of course, but just speaking them is not enough. While you are young, you
should broaden your minds by going abroad and learning about different values and
cultures. It would help you work well with non-Japanese people in the future.”
12 / Ban has been working for people in need with the help of many others around the
world. As long as there are people who need his help, his efforts to aid them will never
end.

10 / 今日,坂は新たなプロジェクトについて考えています。彼の計画は発展途上国で
